How it works
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²
- Convert your height from centimetres to metres (divide by 100).
- Square your height in metres (multiply it by itself).
- Divide your weight in kilograms by that squared height.
- Compare the result against the WHO categories to read your weight status.
Examples
Normal weight — 65 kg at 170 cm
Underweight — 45 kg at 160 cm
Overweight — 80 kg at 170 cm
Obese — 95 kg at 175 cm
Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy BMI?
Under the WHO international classification, a BMI from 18.5 to 24.9 is considered a normal, healthy weight. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese.
How is BMI calculated?
BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in metres (kg/m²). For example, 65 kg at 1.70 m is 65 ÷ (1.70 × 1.70) = 22.5.
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
BMI is a useful general screening tool, but it does not measure body fat directly and does not distinguish muscle from fat. Athletes, pregnant women, older adults, and children may need other measures. Treat BMI as a guide and consult a doctor for personal advice.
Do Asians use different BMI cut-offs?
Some health authorities apply lower Asia-Pacific thresholds (for example, overweight at BMI 23 and obese at 27.5) because health risks can appear at a lower BMI in Asian populations. This calculator uses the standard WHO international categories; ask your doctor which applies to you.
